Far Sector

Jemisin, N.K. & Campbell, J. (2019). Far Sector. DC Comics

Annotation:

Travel to the furthest sector of the DC universe with rookie Green Lantern, Sojourner “Jo” Mullein, assigned to the City Enduring – a bustling metropolis; population of twenty billion. Jo finds it difficult enough learning the culture and navigating relationships as the only human amongst three emotionless alien species; and now finds herself tasked with solving the city’s first murder in 500 years. With only her ring, her experience, and few allies, Jo must navigate this investigation while dealing with political figures with hidden agenda, and a delicate social structure on the brink with twenty billion emotionally repressed citizens who aren’t afraid to riot. N.K. Jemisin’s award winning series is a non-stop thrill ride; featuring breathtaking visuals by Jamal Campbell, mystery, intrigue, romance, and effortlessly blends social commentary of civil rights activism with superhero action. Welcome to Far Sector.

Discussion:

There’s something about the adrenaline genre that I find difficult to pin down. Perhaps it is because of how widely it can apply to a variety of subgenres. I feel any type of story can provide readers with a rush of adrenaline, whether it’s the standard action/adventure, mystery, or thriller; it can also be said that horror, sci-fi, fantasy, suspense, or even romance can get your blood pumping. Considering this, it may be easier to promote the genre itself in the form of different mediums for readers to experience the sensation in a new way. Graphic novels can easily evoke the feeling of adrenaline with its quick pace, style, and visual storytelling. This was the reason I had chosen a comic to read for the class (plus I’m a big comics nerd). It’s easy to feel like you’ve gotten wrapped up in the action through the art; keeping those pages turning. Audiobooks can provide audible cues to illicit the feeling of danger or chaos – making the hair on your arms stand up. I think it would be fun to promote the genre in a library this way. Imagine a big sign that says, “Experience a new way to get your adrenaline flowing!” Or something catchier. It may also get readers to try a different format that they may not have considered before. Two birds with one stone!
