Bishop, K. (2026). The Third Gilmore Girl: A Memoir [Audiobook]. Gallery Books. (Original work published Simon & Schuster)
Annotation:
Kelly Bishop, known for her role as Emily Gilmore in Gilmore Girls, narrates her autobiography starting with her love of ballet. She ushers listeners and/or readers down her Broadway career, starting as a dancer and then transitioning into an actress, both on stage and on screen for film and TV. She won a Tony award for Best Supporting or Featured Actress in a Chorus Line and listeners/readers get to vicariously experience both the glitz and glamour, and not-so-glamourous side of working in showbiz. Kelly preferred to keep her personal life private, but with this autobiography, she is now offering the public, a behind-the-scenes view of her childhood, family, hardships, romantic life, and her experience with working in the entertainment industry. Everything for Kelly began At The Ballet, and readers/listeners will laugh, cry and be entertained from the first scene to the closing remarks.

Discussion:
Growing up, the non-fiction books in my school were always informative texts, serious, detached from emotion, and at times dry or boring; however, non-fiction can still be humorous, emotional and tied to human connection and experiences. Non-fiction is not a genre I typically read; however, as a massive Gilmore Girls fan, I was excited to hear about Kelly’s life. Hearing her narrate her own story, brought her experience to life, in such a way that I would not have had the same experience, had I just read a physical or virtual copy of her autobiography. As an actress, she knows how to use her voice to convey emotions, pause for effect and engage with listeners; however, when narrating her own life and not taking on a persona of a character, I could feel how she broke that 4th wall between her as a dancer/actress/performer-self, her personal/private-self, and the listener. I could hear her joy, pride, grief, pain, and love for her career, and special loved ones in her life. That human-ness feature that I seek in non-fiction, made this autobiography listening experience very enjoyable. Readers that also seek a deep emotional connection when reading, could enjoy non-fiction autobiographies and/or biographies of real people who share their life story.
