Kilewer, M (2024). We Used to Live Here. Atria/Emily Bestler Books.
Annotation: Have you ever been scrolling on your phone and come across something (spooky or not) that sends you down a rabbit-hole looking for every bit of information there possibly is about it? I definitely have. We Used to Live Here by Marcus Kilewer is just that. Written originally as a reddit post on the r/nosleep subreddit, it has been republished as a full length book that combines a narrative story and those bits of evidence you find in an internet rabbit hole. It is spooky, thrilling, and might just keep you up at night searching for more answers. We Used to Live Here follows the main character Eve, who has just moved in to a new home with her girlfriend Charlie in the back country of Oregon. Over a few short days, Eve’s world is turned upside down after she answers the door to some unexpected (and unsuspecting) visitors.
Discussion: When I picture what adrenaline is at least in terms of reading, my mind immediately goes specifically to horror and thrillers, the stuff that really gets your heart going. While truthfully horror and thrillers are not normally my genre of choice, when you find a good one it usually stands out as something you will remember. I also feel like horror and thriller books can be hard books to get readers to try out, as they can literally be scary and sometimes out of the readers comfort zone. This is when a good description that includes the option for the reader to spoil some of the book for themselves can come in handy.
