Kui, R. (2017). Delicious in dungeon. (Vol. 1, T. Engel, Trans.). Yen Press. (Original work published 2015).

The dungeon seems like the perfect place for young adventurers to build their reputation and make a living, but watch out for the monsters! When Laios’ sister, Falin, is eaten by a red dragon, Laios and loyal members of his party embark on a quest to save her before she is digested. They need to keep up their strength for the battles ahead, but how will they survive in the dungeon with no money or supplies to buy food? This fast-paced manga provides action and adventure while remaining lightweight and upbeat. And it may even inspire you to try some new recipes, though you will have to find a substitute for basilisk meat!

I had a bit of a hard time choosing a book for this genre. I did originally read another book that I thought might fit, but it did not seem fast-paced or thrilling enough, so I decided against including it. I have the perception that adrenaline genre books need to be exciting in a more dark or scary way, like a life-or-death stakes adventure or a crime thriller. It reminds me of the “adrenaline junkie”; someone who searches for that high feeling by taking risks that seem dangerous to other people. But, this kind of book does not appeal as much to me, as I tend to use reading more as an escape from stress than something to experience stress through, even if it is in a safe way. So, I tried to shift my perspective and chose a book that does bring the adventure and is a fast-paced read, but ultimately still feels comforting rather than scary. If you think you might enjoy this, there are 14 volumes and the series is finished! There is also a Netflix adaptation that follows the manga quite closely, though the adaptation is currently not finished yet (but a new season is coming out soon!).
